Georeferencing Animal Specimen Datasets
نویسندگان
چکیده
For biodiversity research, the field of study that is concerned with the biological diversity of our planet, it is of utmost importance that the location of an animal specimen find is known with high precision. Due to specimens often having been collected over the course of many years, their accompanying geographical data is often ambiguous or may be very imprecise. In this contribution, we detail an approach that utilizes reasoning and external sources to improve the geographical information of animal finds. We show that adding external domain knowledge improves the ability to georeference locations over traditional methods that focus solely on analyzing geographical information. Additionally, our system is able to output the confidence it has in its decisions through a confidence measure based on the difficulty of the instance and the steps undertaken

Quality Control of Direct Georeferencing Data
Quality Control (QC) is a critical step in the mapping process when using Applanix POS AV system in the direct georeferencing mode or in the aerotriangulation mode of mapping. Therefore, in this paper, the necessary steps of quality control of direct georeferencing data is presented in some detail. This is presented through Applanix PSOPAC software package using real mapping data sets. First, a...
متن کاملError in target-based georeferencing and registration in terrestrial laser scanning
Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has been used widely for various applications, such as measurement of movement caused by natural hazards and Earth surface processes. In TLS surveying, registration and georeferencing are two essential steps, and their accuracy often determines the usefulness of TLS surveys. So far, evaluation of registration and georeferencing errors has been based on statistic...
متن کاملSpecimens at the Center: An Informatics Workflow and Toolkit for Specimen- Level Analysis of Public DNA Database Data
Major public DNA databases — NCBI GenBank, the DNA DataBank of Japan (DDBJ), and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) — are invaluable biodiversity libraries. Systematists and other biodiversity scientists commonly mine these databases for sequence data to use in phylogenetic studies, but such studies generally use only the taxonomic identity of the sequenced tissue, not the specime...
متن کاملPublishing Reference Geodata on the Web: Opportunities and Challenges for IGN France
The French national mapping agency (IGN) produces several different but complementary geographic vector reference databases delivered in traditional GIS formats. However, linked data users have different expectations and habits, such as the need to browse an entire data catalogue in RDF using the ”follow-your-nose” navigation capacity from one graph to another. Besides, traditional GIS data for...
متن کاملFive task clusters that enable efficient and effective digitization of biological collections
This paper describes and illustrates five major clusters of related tasks (herein referred to as task clusters) that are common to efficient and effective practices in the digitization of biological specimen data and media. Examples of these clusters come from the observation of diverse digitization processes. The staff of iDigBio (The U.S. National Science Foundation's National Resource for Ad...
